Together Again: The Kitchen is Open!

We’re thrilled to share that the brand new kitchen and dining hall at the Children's Home is now open and in use! Bright, clean, and big enough for the whole family to eat together again, this space is a beautiful answer to prayer and a reminder of what’s possible when a community like ours shows up with open hearts. Thank you.

This milestone is just the latest in a larger story of transformation unfolding at the Home.

Back in 2021, the completion of a new boys’ dorm set off a ripple effect across campus. Three older buildings were quickly repurposed:

  1. The small boys’ dorm became a quiet infirmary.

  2. The big boys’ dorm turned into a proper office for administration and official visits.

  3. The former office became a small sitting room for the home’s director and her husband.

Then in 2022, the medium boys’ dorm was converted into a makeshift kitchen after the original one- built on the edge of a steep hill- started developing significant cracks and was deemed unsafe. For over two years, meals were prepared in that temporary space. While the home was deeply grateful, it was never a sustainable solution. The structure was over 100 years old, made from mud and dug walls, with little ventilation and a leaking metal roof. It became unbearably hot inside, and during monsoon season, water regularly leaked through the roof- making it miserable for cooking and eating and leading to mould development in the walls. The space was also too small for everyone. The boys ate in makeshift dining area beside the kitchen, Girls ate in their dorm, and staff elsewhere. Food had to be transported by bicycle to the girls' dorm at every meal.

But now, everything has changed.

This spring, the new kitchen and dining hall officially opened- and it’s transforming daily life. Nearly 100 children and staff now gather to share meals in one space, enjoying not just food, but fellowship. For the first time in years, the family is eating together again.

And the blessings didn’t stop there.

An unfinished space below the dining hall is being completed as staff housing—another pressing need on campus. The first to benefit will be Mr.D, who has faithfully served as the home's cook since 2010. When the temporary kitchen closed, Mr.D and his family moved into that space- a step up from their previous home, which had become too run-down to live in and was quickly torn down. He and his family will soon have a proper home of their own.

This kitchen is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a signpost, a reminder of God’s provision!

Near the entrance of each home is a sign bearing these words:

“The Lord has done this, and it is marvellous in our eyes.” Psalm 118:23
