About Child of Mine
Child of Mine is a Canadian charity that partners with two children’s homes in North India and a number of their graduates. While the homes typically house and raise close to two hundred children in a loving and caring environment, many of the graduates who have now left the homes still call these this unique community their family. Children, who range from the ages of three upwards, at the homes are typically from destitute backgrounds or from families that cannot financially support them. The atmosphere at each home is very much one of a large family, with the older children taking care of the younger ones and regarding them as siblings. The hard-working, dedicated staff are driven by a firm commitment to develop these young people as leaders, who will grow to love and serve the nation of India. We are proud to say that among the many graduates of the homes are teachers, nurses, charted accountants, and university professors.
The Child of Mine Story
In 2005, an exploratory team from a church in Kelowna traveled to India for a brief two-week trip and were inspired by the vision and dedication of two children’s homes. The following year, in 2006, a second team returned to India for six months. During this time, they visited various projects and met many incredible people doing great work in India. However, they felt a strong calling to partner with the two children's homes.
The team then learned that the current funding partner for the children’s homes was shifting its focus from residential care to community development, making future financial support for the homes uncertain. This news sparked their imagination, and the idea of a long-term financial partnership emerged. They saw an opportunity to support locally run and established homes that had strong leadership and a clear vision but were now lacking funds. This presented a clear invitation to step in and help.
In 2008, Child of Mine was formed, and today serves to support the vision of the homes to equip and raise leaders to love and serve India; providing guidance and leadership where and when applicable, and allow the staff and Boards of the homes the freedom and flexibility to carry out their mandate. Child of Mine works alongside a number of organizations and individuals in Canada providing partnership in the care and upbringing of the children and provides holistic support for the homes.
